Aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic sinuses of Valsalva — beyond Marfan syndrome: a single centre experience

Maryanne Caruana,Mary N. Sheppard,Wei Li

Frontiers of Medicine 2014, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 419-426 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0383-6

Abstract:

Aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic sinuses of Valsalva has been most extensively documented in the setting of aortopathies, particularly Marfan syndrome. On the other hand, there is limited data in the literature about congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysms outside this context. For the purpose of this review, we carried out a literature search on aneurysmal dilatation of the sinuses of Valsalva in Marfan syndrome, and compared this with congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysms, also including data from a case series from our institution. In conclusion, there are differences in management of aortic dilatation in Marfan syndrome and congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysms. Though less well-recognised, congenital aneurysms are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality and timely intervention is necessary.

Nicotine gum or patch treatment for smoking cessation and smoking reduction: a multi-centre study in

Dan Xiao, Nanshan Zhong, Chunxue Bai, Qingyu Xiu, Canmao Xie, Dayi Hu, Yun Mao, Roland Perfekt, Elisabeth Kruse, Qing Li, John Jiangnan Liu, Chen Wang

Frontiers of Medicine 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 84-90 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0311-9

Abstract:

In China, around 23% of physicians (41% male, 3% female) currently smoke. Pharmacotherapy for tobacco dependence is available, but is not widely used in China. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effectiveness and the safety on smoking cessation of nicotine gum and nicotine patch in Chinese healthcare professionals. Three hundred regular smokers motivated to quit were recruited from six hospitals in China. All subjects were accepted nicotine replacement therapy, and they could choose nicotine gum (2 mg or 4 mg, depending on baseline smoking level) or nicotine patch (15 mg/16 h) for 12 weeks, with a 12-week follow-up. Limited behavioural support was provided. At Week 24, the 2--24 weeks continuous abstinence rate (verified by expired carbon monoxide) was 17%, the point prevalence abstinence rate (no smoking since the previous visit) was 35%, and 38% of subjects had continuously reduced their daily cigarette consumption by at least 50% versus baseline. Compliance with treatment was good, particularly with patch. No serious adverse event was reported, and most adverse events were mild or moderate. The most common treatment-related adverse events were gastro-intestinal (both gum and patch) and local irritation symptoms. Nicotine patch and gum were well tolerated in Chinese smokers. Abstinence rates were comparable to those previously reported with nicotine replacement therapy, and many smokers who did not quit substantially reduced their cigarette consumption.

Advances in eucalypt research in China

Yaojian XIE, Roger J. ARNOLD, Zhihua WU, Shuaifei CHEN, Apeng DU, Jianzhong LUO

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 380-390 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2017171

Abstract: Eucalypt plantations in China currently exceed 4.5 Mhm , and this country has the third largest area of such plantations after India and Brazil. China’s eucalypt industry now comprises a complex, multifaceted industry including seedling propagation, fertilizer production and supply, plantation silviculture, harvesting and transport, wood processing for products including lumber, pulp and paper, and wood-based panels, as well as bioenergy production and various forest byproducts and non-wood forest products. In 2015, the combined value of output of this whole industry was around 300 billion CNY. Chinese research and development (R&D) has been instrumental in supporting growth and development across the whole breadth of the country’s eucalypt industry. In this report, recent advances in this R&D are reviewed under six key topics: (1) advanced propagation technology; (2) genetic resources and breeding; (3) targeted silviculture; (4) eucalypt disease and pest management; (5) enhancing plantation ecology and sustainability; and (6) wood processing and byproduct technology. R&D has greatly facilitated expansion and proliferation of all parts of China’s eucalypt industry. This industry is now of major importance to China’s economy; it involves tens of thousands of growers and companies that provide livelihoods for hundreds of thousands of people.

Discussion on the development orientation of Shanghai International Shipping Center

Che Jun,Ji Lan,Tang Lianbang

Strategic Study of CAE 2013, Volume 15, Issue 6,   Pages 66-73

Abstract:

On the analysis of the development of the main international shipping center and the new development trend of international shipping, it is clearly pointed out that the development of Shanghai International Shipping Center is now at the formative stage, and the appropriate choice and development direction of Shanghai International Shipping Center at this stage are committed to enhance the hard strength of Shanghai Port. Throughout the construction of port infrastructure, it will help Shanghai to consolidate its position as the main international container hub port of the world, to accelerate the concentration of shipping resources, and to promote the rapid development of the soft strength of Shanghai Port such as shipping service. So the status of Shanghai International Shipping Center will be finally confirmed around the world.
